Choosing the right keywords to target in the major search engines is an integral part of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This work may sound cumbersome and almost overwhelming (especially for someone who is a beginner) but this is not as hard as it sounds.
Determine who your target market is. Who and what is your website marketed towards and who are you trying to reach with your products or services? Age and Geographical location are very important in this equation. Based on your target market, make a list of specific key words, industry terms and phrases that people may use to find your services or product. For example, if your website repairs HVAC, relevant keywords may include “air conditioning repair,“ “toddler toys,” or “kids games.” Remember: Organic SEO is the best way to make money online.
Consider long-tail terms instead of broad, basic terms. Long-tail terms refer to search that are very detailed and are composed of more than two terms. They will not yield as much volume of traffic as basic words, long-tail terms every SEO knows they are easier to rank for. An example, it may not make sense for you to target a term like “Lawyer” considering the enormous amount of competition competing in that industry. A much more cost-effective term may be “Commercial Escrow Law Firm” or another term that focuses on a specific category, brand name, or detailed product you sell or service. If you offer a geographically-based service or product, consider using your location in the search term (i.e. “Dallas Plumbing, Chicago Snowboards.”)
Narrowed down your keywords, research the traffic of each. There are a handful of tools online that allow you to research the approximate number of people who actually search for those keywords online. While particular keyword will yield a lot more searches than another. Knowing that choosing a specific keywords can increase the opportunities of your website showing up near the top on search engines (Google, Yahooand Bing). Always make sure that your keywords are relevant to searches pertaining to your business. If someone is searching online for ‘water purification’ you wouldn’t want to direct them to a site about water heaters.
For best SEO results, think Laser specific and deep. Focusing on just one or two keywords at a time will get quality results faster and cost less than trying to target the entire market with a shotgun approach.
